The SOLO SHOW does not draw inspiration from the circus (a stage for artists, trapezists, jugglers), but from the tents which were placed alongside the circus at the time of Barnum’s shows and which were thus named after their location. The Side Show – a tent strewn with wonders, freaks and animals forgotten by Noah. “The five-legged cow”, “the two-headed pig”, “the unicorn goat”. All of them were creatures to be displayed, as they had no other abilities. Likewise, the SOLO SHOW is a two-headed creature, divided by a burlesquish saloon interlude – 15 minutes of illusions, like a medicine show where magic potions are sold, together with Christopher Wonder and Jessica Love, the tattoo lady playing with fire.
In the first part of the SOLO SHOW the attractions are addressed to the inside and they are summarized in the illustrations on the poster: “The story-faced man. The man with his face disfigured from stories”. All his soul emerges on his face, turning him into a monster, like all the multiple creatures which are not three things in one, but none of the three.
Attractions are the others indeed. Everything this man relates to. The other, love, the road, war, nations, the Earth. Himself.
In the second part of the SOLO SHOW, it is time for the attractions mentioned on the banners that were hoisted during the interval: “the edgy jellyfish”, “the diver octopus in love”, “the abyss siren”, “the living man”, “the human piñata”, “the Minotaur”. You need exercise and a bit of “Gymnastics” to bear so many attractions at one time, but most of all you need a cage, a golden cage of light like the one that we build around ourselves everyday. In the cage are ghosts from the past, seductions, tyrants, monsters, expanding in circles until the orgy, Carnival ritual of “the human piñata”, winning over death with fireworks, with the final sacrifice of the wild beast, the Minotaur ox coming from the upside underworld, caught, jailed and displayed.
In the final, the stage becomes a saloon, as soon as intimacy increases and the audience ends up in the cage seduced by the Sybil oracle, which provides fragments of enigmas to take home and use to investigate the future.
It’s called SOLO SHOW because you have to deal with it on your own, holding tight, both on stage and on the seats. And also because, after all, it’s just a show – entertainment, just like having a ride on a roller coaster and ceasing the disbelief. Ceasing the constant endeavour to manage time. A truce with life, to let us be attacked from the inside, by ourselves, the moment we close our eyes.
